Islam And Its Prophet

  • Muhammad(PBUH) was born in the year 632 C.E. in the city of Makkah now in Saudi Arabia.
  • His nick name was “al-Amin” for his honesty and good character.
  • He was troubled by the inequities in the society and the city he lived in and would frequently retire to mount Hira to meditate.
  • During one of the visits to the mountain he received a revelation.
  • This revelation was in the form of the angel Gabriel who asked him to recite the first verses of the Qur’an, Islam’s holy book.
  • Muhammad(PBUH) heard the voice say, “Recite! Recite in the name of God who created mankind. Created man from a clot. Announce that God is generous. He taught man by the pen. Taught man what he knew not.”
  • This was the beginning of the religion of Islam.
  • Muhammad(PBUH) was 40 years old when he received his first revelation.
  • He continued to receive revelations and taught and practiced the religion of Islam for another 23 years.
  • Muhammad(PBUH) was emphatic in pointing out that although a Messenger of God he was human.
  • He did not claim divinity.
  • Hence there are no images of Muhammad(PBUH)
  • Muslims respect and love him greatly and try to emulate him in their daily actions, but they don’t worship him.
  • Muhammad(PBUH) taught that the message of Islam was a continuation and culmination of the messages brought by other messengers and religions in the past.
  • He also taught that Islam’s message was a corrective of the old messages.
